Porter General Store, once the gathering place for locals.
Every day is a wonder here at Porter Horse Farm. It is filled with song of bright red Cardinals, Sparrows, Bluebirds and numerous others. The surrounding countryside fills one with energy and peace. A place everyone truly loves at first sight. Many that come to visit can’t believe how beautiful it is here.
There are giant, ancient trees that hold the secrets of what they have seen through the years. There are wonderful places to sit on the two wrap around porches on both the first and second floor of the 132 year old home, places to relax with a cup of tea and the morning paper in the morning, or a glass of wine in the evening.
The four seasons here are amazing, but truly the changing of the leaves in the autumn is a show in itself. Just sit, wrap a sweater around yourself and watch Mother Nature take over. Watch the trees change color as the world makes its parting offering, as the autumn cloaks of red and gold adorn the trees, to inspire a wistful goodbye to summer.
It is possible to own a piece of history with the Porter family home, dating back to 1878. This home will amaze you with the original wood planks that make up the walls in this home. Before the invention of plaster, wood was used in the building of the homes in this area, and the walls and floor are the original that were picked out by the family during the construction of this Southern beauty. Come, walk through the rooms, and picture this home with the sounds of the children’s feet on the stairs as they went up to their rooms in the evening. Hear the mother tucking them into one of the five bedrooms in the home, and saying their nightly prayers with them before leaving to finish the chores of the day.
